Muscat: For the first time in Oman, more than 6,000 people tested for COVID-19 in 24 hours leading to 2,164 new cases of the disease, the data from the Ministry of Health revealed.

A total number of 6,173 samples were tested, taking the total samples tested to 244,487 on Monday of which 58,179 people were tested positive.

The Tarassud app, which provides daily updates on the COVID-19 situation in the country, reported that Muscat Governorate recorded 827 new cases of the disease. The 340 cases in Wilayat Seeb aside, that makes the total cases of COVID-19 in Seeb only to be 12,338 cases.

Wilayat Bawshar reported 238 fresh cases making it the second wilayat which registered more cases in the Sultanate.

Both wilayats reported significantly more cases than Wilayat Amerat, which recorded only 89 new cases. The Wilayat of Qurraiyat reported 59 new cases, Wilayat Muttrah recorded 52 cases, and 49 cases were reported in Muscat.

Outside the Governorate of Muscat, the highest jump in cases was seen in the North Al Batinah Governorate, which reported 526 fresh cases to reach a total of 7,530 reported cases so far. 229 fresh cases were also seen in South Batinah, which means that the governorate now has a total of 6,029 reported cases.

The Southern Dhofar Governorate reported another 145 new cases, taking the total number of reported COVID-19 cases there to 1,967. In Al Dhahirah, 141 cases were reported, pushing the total number of cases there to 1,019. The number of cases in Ad Dakhiliyah rose to 3,116 after 139 new cases were reported there.

The total number of COVID cases in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate crossed the 14,000-infection mark after 75 new cases were reported there. In addition, 63 new cases also came to light in North Al Sharqiyah, leaving that governorate with a total of 1,272. Al Buraimi Governorate now has 631 cases of infection, after 18 more people were reported to have caught the disease there.

In the Northern Governorate, the presence of another case brought the total number of infections there to 37. The only region in Oman to not register a new case was the Central Al Wusta Governorate.

There have also been a total of 259 deaths owing to the spread of the pandemic in Oman. 156 of these unfortunate deaths have been in the Muscat Governorate, while North Batinah has recorded 31. 36 deaths have taken place in South Batinah, Ten each in South Sharqiyah and Ad Dakhiliyah Governorates, Six in Dhofar, 7 in Ad Dakhiliyah, two in North Al Sharqiyah and one death in the Dhahirah Governorate.
