Bahrain to date has administered more than 4.5 million doses of different Covid-19 vaccines, it has been revealed.

Health Ministry Under-Secretary Dr Waleed Al Manea also highlighted that 89 per cent of the country’s eligible population has been vaccinated with two shots, accounting for 70pc of Bahrain estimated 1.5 million population.

Meanwhile, 99pc of those who registered have taken two jabs of their choice.

The senior medic also added that 44pc of children aged from 12-17 years have taken two doses, while 63pc of them have taken at least one dose.

He also highlighted that the country conducted more than 5m reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests – which is three-and-a-half times the size of Bahrain’s population.

Special vaccination facilities for the elderly and the high-risk population, the daily target of 31,000 shots from 31 centres across the country, and the dramatic drop in the daily cases from more than 3,000 in May to less than 100 in July were among the other highlights.

Dr Al Manea also noted that since its launch in February last year, the national communication line 444 has responded to more than 5m calls and Bahrain was one of the first countries to have launched the electronic application – BeAware – to follow up on the list of cases and contacts with confidentiality.

“All these numbers and other achievements were the result of the hard work by the medical team and its belief that the health and safety of everyone is a top priority,” he said.

“These efforts gathered awareness and commitment from all citizens and residents of the precautionary measures and the demand for vaccination, which contributed to us reaching the green level according to the traffic light mechanism for the level of spread of the virus.”

He thanked “every conscious individual” whose commitment to precautionary measures contributed to preserving the health and safety of all.

He was addressing a Press conference held remotely from the Crown Prince Centre for Training and Medical Research, Riffa yesterday.

Present were Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and WHO Bahrain head Dr Tasnim Atatrah.

Ms Al Saleh also summarised Bahrain’s strategy in combating the virus, elaborating on the steps the country has adopted since the onset of the pandemic last March.

“On the international level, the kingdom did not overlook to do its part by strengthening co-operation in order to support the global response to the pandemic, so as to contribute to the elimination of a global pandemic,” she said.

Meanwhile, Supreme Council for Health chairman Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa met Dr Ghebreyesus and said Bahrain was looking forward to greater co-operation with WHO.

“Today, more than ever, we are looking forward to doubling our joint efforts, and we in Bahrain look very positively to the efforts made by WHO through various co-ordination frameworks and international forums to enhance the collective response to confront the pandemic,” said Dr Shaikh Mohammed.
