MANAMA: Bahraini traders may not be able to export local products, particularly food items, to Saudi Arabia two months from now until they meet the requirements set by Saudi Food and Drug Authority.

They will not be allowed to export their products to Saudi Arabia if they aren’t Halal- certified (permitted under the Islamic Law). At present, there isn’t a single Halal certification body in Bahrain. Conditions also include ISO certification, sources told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.

They urged authorities concerned to step in and help traders comply with such requirements, stressing the need to establish a food authority in Bahrain. This will ensure export of food products as well as quality and safety, they said.

Bahraini exports to Saudi Arabia account for about 60 per cent of the volume of trade exchange between the two countries.
