KUWAIT CITY - The parliamentary Legislative Affairs Committee on Monday will discuss the draft law concerning rents after hearing the opinion of Ministry of Justice.

According to the bill, the tenants of investment or commercial buildings will be exempted from paying the rent during the first six months of an emergency situation defined as the period of natural disasters, wars or pandemic.

The rent value will be reduced by 60 percent during the second six months of the emergency. The reduction of the rent will continue as long as the government imposes lockdown due to the emergency conditions.

In all cases, the landlords should not evacuate the tenants during the period of emergency. If the tenant paid the rent in advance, he will be compensated through a free period equal to the rent paid in advance. The draft law is applicable to private buildings and those rented to individuals or companies by the government.
