Manama: His Majesty King Hamad issued an order reinstating the citizenship of 551 convicts whose nationality had been revoked by the courts.

The Royal order is in line with provisions of Article 24 of the law on Protection of the Community against Terrorist Acts, which stipulates that rulings related to citizenship withdrawal will not be effective unless approved by the King.

His Majesty had already given directives to authorities to evaluate the situation of convicts whose citizenship had been revoked before final implementation of court verdicts.

The study should be based on criteria pertaining to the seriousness, impact and consequences of crimes, as well as any danger the convict may pose to national security.

The King assigned the Interior Minister to study the citizenship revocation rulings, and prepare a list of reinstatement beneficiaries.

Parliament speaker Fouzia Zainal, Shura Council chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh, judges and senior officials welcomed the royal directive and said “it would remain a bright chapter in Bahrain’s history”.
