Kuwait has played a key role in the reconciliation process within the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported citing a European expert on Gulf issues.
"Of course [the late Ami] Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is primarily to be credited here, but it is comforting to see that the new leadership is continuing his work," Dr. Cinzia Bianco, Gulf Research Fellow at the a pan-European think-tank, European Council on Foreign Relations, told KUNA in an interview.
Kuwait Foreign Minister and Acting Information Minister Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Mohammad Al-Sabah announced, on December 4, "fruitful" talks were held recently, in regard to achieving reconciliation and supporting Gulf and Arab solidarity and stability.
In the first week of December, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia said that progress had been made towards resolving the dispute that has seen Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt sever diplomatic, trade and travel ties with Qatar since mid-2017.
According to Reuters, the UAE appreciated efforts by Kuwait and the US to strengthen Gulf Arab unity.
UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash in a Twitter post praised Riyadh's "good endeavours on behalf of the four states".
Bianco who holds a PhD in Gulf Studies from the University of Exeter said the new Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah "has a long-standing experience in navigating Kuwait's domestic policy."
"Like many others around the world, Kuwaitis are facing economic and social challenges stemming from the pandemic. Kuwait's strength has always been that citizens have the opportunity to express those grievances," KUNA reported citing the Bianco as saying.
