There has been a 361 per cent increase in the number of passengers travelling between Bahrain and India last month compared to December 2021, it has emerged.According to the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry’s monthly Civil Aviation Statistics for December 2022, the four destinations that recorded the most passenger growth compared to December 2021 were:l India (New Delhi and Mumbai) – 57,283 passengers (361pc growth);l Saudi Arabia (Jeddah) – 46,996 travellers (162pc increase);l The UAE (Abu Dhabi) – 41,273 passengers (147pc rise); andl Kuwait – 37,679 (152pc growth).

However, the ministry did not provide comparative statistics for December 2021.According to the latest report, a total of 740,209 passengers passed through Bahrain in December 2022 – 369,842 disembarked while 370,367 embarked.This represents a marginal increase in comparison to October 2022 when a total of 651,925 passengers were registered with 323,084 passengers embarking and 328,841 disembarking.Meanwhile, in December 2022, aircraft movement was recorded at a total of 7,704 with 3,849 arrivals and 3,855 departures, and 35,937 flying over Bahrain, added the ministry.Correspondingly, in October 2022, a total of 7,527 aircraft were recorded with 3,765 arrivals and 3,762 departures and 33,017 aircraft using Bahrain air space.

The movement of cargo and mail in December 2022 was put as 32,216 tonnes – 11,130 tonnes imported, 5,836 tonnes exported and 15,250 tonnes in transhipment.In October 2022, a total of 31,496 tonnes of cargo and mail were handled in Bahrain with 11,029 tonnes imported, 5,886 tonnes exported and 14,581 tonnes in transhipment.

The ministry also revealed that a total of 77,499,758 people used Bahrain’s public transport system, from February 2015 to December 2022, with 32,493 users registered last month (December 2022).

“In December 2022, a total of 30,520 containers were registered at Khalifa Bin Salman Port,” said the ministry in a statement yesterday.“A total of 77 vessels, 3,801 vehicles and 30,043 tonnes of general cargo were also registered in December 2022.“Ports and Maritime Affairs also handled 2,246,487 metric tonnes of solid bulk and 782,506 metric tonnes of liquid bulk at private jetties.“The department also conducted 184 departure certifications, 16 inspections and issued 16 commercial licences.”
