Ambitious student teams from 13 different schools in Oman are participating in the second edition of the Oman Sustainability Fair 2023 at the Hotel InterContinental Muscat today. The event begins at 4pm.
‘The purpose of this event is to bring awareness and promote sustainability by bringing together the Oman community. The focal point of the fair is a high school competition in which 13 Oman schools will be presenting their ideas on how to make Oman more sustainable,’ a statement issued by the event organiser – Oman American Business Center (OABC) / AmCham Oman – said.
This fun event will bring the Oman community together to raise awareness and promote sustainability in the sultanate. Teams from 13 Oman high schools will be presenting their ideas on how to make Oman more sustainable. The event will also feature work done by environmental organisations, the US Embassy Muscat, SMEs, and businesses.
There will be a fair-like atmosphere, ‘Move Green’ will be on-stage playing, while several SME’s will have their sustainable products for purchase at the event which is being held after a gap of two years. The event could not be held for the past two years due to the pandemic.
The first edition had been held in February 2020 when nine schools had participated to share their ideas on how to protect the environment. The Sultan’s School had emerged as the overall winner while Indian School Wadi Kabir won for the ‘Best Presentation’, The American International School of Muscat won for the ‘Most Practical Implementation’ and ABA for the ‘Most Innovative Idea’.
This year, the award categories include Most innovative idea, Most practical implementation, Best presentation, and Overall winner.
As the official affiliate of the US Chamber of Commerce in Oman (AmCham Oman), the OABC promotes understanding, partnerships and other matters of mutual economic interest between business communities in Oman and the United States. Formed in 2003, the OABC’s mission is to foster the development of commercial activity between Oman and the United States.
With 30 events annually and over 170 member companies, OABC is Oman’s most active business council and networking group. The Oman American Business Center (OABC) is best known for hosting high-level professional networking events and informational sessions for professionals across the Sultanate.
The event is headed by Heather Redling, CEO, who has 20 years of experience spanning across 3 continents. She started her career as an Animal Training intern at the Walt Disney World Resort followed by 10 years with SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment. After 5 years in a wetsuit she traded it in for a business suit and focused her efforts in driving business and launching attractions for SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment’s entire US portfolio of theme parks and water parks. During this time, she also provided marketing consultancy to SeaWorld’s partner Loro Parque and Siam Park located in Tenerife, Spain.
In addition to her industry experience, Heather has taught undergraduate courses in International Business and Cross-Cultural Management at Columbia College (USA) and has been invited to speak at numerous industry conferences in the United Arab Emirates.She relocated to Oman with her family at the start of 2020 where she was providing marketing strategy and project management to several businesses within the Badr Investment Group.

Representing ESO, Dr Ali Akaak, an academic and professional in business and tourism management and a member of several societies, will be addressing the gathering at the event.

The companies supporting the event include be’ah (Oman Environmental Services Holding Company), Arab Lead and Three Pillars Consulting while those showcasing their work include US. Embassy Muscat, Move Green – Band, Verde and Green, YN Products, Clean up Oman, EFP (Egg carton recycling), Theresa Boshoff (recycled paper), Plasbin, and Nasser al Kindi (professional wildlife photographer).
