A surge in the US dollar against the Iraq dinar sharply boosted cement and steel prices in the OPEC member in the first four months of 2021, according to official data.

From around 90,000 dinars ($61.8) at the end of 2020, the price of one tonne of cement swelled to nearly 104,000 dinars ($71.5) per tonne at the end of April, the Iraqi Planning Ministry said in a report published by Shafaq News and other publications.

Steel prices jumped by around 55 percent from 779,000 dinars ($535.4) per tonne to nearly 1.21 million dinars ($831.6) in the same period, the report showed.

Building block prices also increased by about 20 percent from 140,000 dinars ($96.2) to 168,000 dinars ($115.5), the report said without specifying the dollar rise.
