Russia has started production of equipment for Egypt's El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (El-Dabaa NPP) project, Rosatom said in a press statement on Sunday.
Rosatom said an agreement was signed by Russian and Egyptian officials to start production of the core catcher devices for Units 1 and 2 of El-Dabaa NPP during the visit a high-ranking delegation led by Mohamed Shaker, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy to machine-building company JSC TyazhMash, based in the city of Syzran in Russia's Samara region.
The statement said the delegates inspected the enterprise’s main workshops that have made various equipment for nuclear power plants in China, India, Turkey and visited the transport gateway elements of Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant.
“Today’s truly important event is the result of diligent collaboration by project teams from both Russia and Egypt. The construction of Egypt’s nuclear power plant is taking place with the full support of [the country’s] political leadership. It is gratifying to see that the [joint] team is showing good results and successfully fulfilling all the tasks it faces in realising this project,” said Shaker.
Earlier, a high-ranking Egyptian delegation led by Amged El-Wakeel, Board Chairman of Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plant Authority (NPPA), had visited Russia’s southernmost nuclear power plant, the 4,071 megawatt (MW) Rostov Nuclear Power Plant in Volgodonsk. The delegation visited the central control panel, which manages the distribution of Rostov NPP-generated electricity, as well as the main control room and the turbine hall of power unit No. 4.
The delegation also visited the Volgodonsk branch of AEM-Technologies JSC (part of Rosatom’s machine-building division Atomenergomash), where the main equipment for Egypt’s El-Dabaa NPP would be manufactured.
El-Dabaa nuclear power plant, located in Dabaa, Matrouh province on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, wil consists of 4 power units with a capacity of 1,200 MW each, and will use 3G VVER-1200 compact water-cooled reactors.
In June, Egypt's NPPA had handed over the licensing documentation for Units 1 and 2 of El Dabaa NPP to the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulation Authority (ENRRA) to start the process of getting construction permits for the project.
