Iraq intends to start reconstruction of Mosul airport in December as part of a post-war rebuilding plan in the Northern city, the official daily Alsabah said on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi has given the green light to launch the project that had been held up due to lack of funds, the paper said, quoting Najm Al-Jabouri, Governor of Nineveh province, of which Mosul is the capital.

Jabouri said he met Kadhimi this week to “put the final touches” on the project, adding that it could be funded through a loan from France.

“We have plans to begin rebuilding Mosul Airport next Month…as for finance, the loan from France is still at our disposal…there is also an alternative plan to push ahead with this project before the end of the year,” he said.

Jabouri did not specify the French loan or mention the project costs, but Iraqi officials have said Mosul International Airport suffered massive damage during the hostilities nearly seven years ago.
