Iraq has approved 1.3 trillion Iraqi dinars ($890 million) for post-war reconstruction projects in the Southern Dhi Qar Governorate, the local press reported on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi announced the funds at a local construction conference on Monday as part of a massive rebuilding programme launched by the OPEC country a few years ago.

Kadhimi, quoted by Shafaq News and other Iraqi publications, said the sum would be used to fund reconstruction projects in 20 towns and villages in the governorate.

Shafaq News also quoted Razak Al-Rukabi, director of Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund, as saying the Governorate has already received nearly 700 billion dinars ($480 million) for urgent projects covering water, electricity, health and infrastructure.

“There are around 170 projects for the time being….we have awarded 136 of them and the remaining 34 projects would be awarded in the next few days,” Rukabi said.
