With a focus on raising education standards, locally based English language teachers are being encouraged to extend their knowledge of up-to-date classroom teaching methodology and practice by attending the Cambridge ESOL Delta, which was launched at International House Dubai in 2010, as part of its Teacher Training and Development Programmes.
After a successful first course in 2010, IH Dubai has developed two programmes for 2011, allowing teachers the flexibility of training on a part time basis throughout the year or on an intensive programme in the school summer holidays.
The Cambridge Delta has changed over the last few years to become more flexible and relevant for teachers, including changing to a Modular framework. Delta Modules can be taken at any stage in a teacher's career. They are suitable for in-service teachers of English in a variety of teaching contexts e.g. adult, primary, or secondary teaching contexts, and are intended for an international audience of non-first language or first language teachers of English.
Achievement of the Delta Modules prepares teachers for more senior teaching and training roles and facilitates progression to/ complements the theoretical focus of other qualifications such as MAs in Linguistics and Language Teaching.
Paula Ellis, Director of Educational Development, said:
"We are delighted to be working with such dedicated, professional teachers; interested in developing their skills and gaining such a valuable qualification. Having worked and trained in so many parts of the world, I find the level of interest in continuing professional development particularly high in the UAE. I know the Cambridge ESOL qualification is particularly valued due to its international recognition."
"We have been working on developing our course to ensure that all current methodological trends are covered, including setting up online course support to reflect the growing importance of blended learning in English language teaching and training. IH Dubai is a highly-regarded training institute in the region, the only institute specialising in teacher training and teacher development. IH Dubai is accredited by the Ministry of Education, and is a member of the International House World Organisation, an international network of schools that are committed to implementing high standards of quality in education and training. Maintaining our reputation as leaders in the fields of teaching and training is very important to us," Paula added.
The Cambridge Delta will be available for teachers who are interested in doing an integrated course or to teachers who are concentrating on one particular Module. It is a very intensive course and requires a real commitment from potential candidates, but this hard work and commitment are rewarded with the quantity and quality of professional development all Delta candidates gain.
