Dubai, United Arab Emirates, March 16, 2010 - Climate Control Middle East, the only Middle Eastern publication that focuses on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration, is holding its first-ever district cooling conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, March 14-16, 2010. Trane, in association with the Dallah Trading Co. (Saudi distributor for Trane), is serving as a gold sponsor of the conference.
The conference brings together district cooling leaders from across the region to discuss the challenges and opportunities cooling presents in Saudi Arabia. Conference topics being addressed include cooling, ventilation, refrigeration and turbine inlet air cooling (TIAC).
Don Eppelheimer, global chiller systems manager, Trane USA, and Albert Haykal, district cooling leader, Trane, Middle East and Africa, have been representing Trane at the conference.
Eppelheimer's keynote address, presented on March 15, compared and contrasted the characteristics of large air-cooled, water-cooled systems and the dry cooler radiator system, which is currently popular in the Kingdom. According to Eppelheimer, each of the three commonly accepted means of rejecting the heat collected by large district cooling systems (surface water, water evaporation and forced convection) offers a unique set of advantages as well as engineering and environmental challenges.
Eppelheimer also played an active role in the panel discussions held Monday on large central chilled water plants and an integrated approach to district cooling, TIAC and industrial cooling applications.
On March 14, Haykal took a leading role in the panel discussion which covered construction challenges, materials and supplies, comparing differences in compressor design, capacity range and available features/options. He also addressed the challenges and opportunities associated with the supply of large 60‑cycle chillers supplied to Saudi Arabia as compared to the 50-cycle units used in other Gulf countries.
