Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA)

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (T?KA) implemented the “Greenhouse Construction and Micro-Gardening Project” in order to meet the needs of four boarding high schools for agricultural production and applied training in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

The project implemented by T?KA aims to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to students, increase the agricultural capacity, and ensure the sustainability of agricultural production in Kenya, where agriculture is the main source of livelihood for a significant portion of the population.

As part of the project, 4 boarding high schools (2 girls’ high schools and 2 boys’ high schools) in Nairobi were provided with greenhouses, irrigation systems, water tanks, plant support systems, a tomato seedling of 8 mm x 24 cm each, 4 micro-gardening units each, protective clothing, pesticide spraying equipment, and school benches.

The crops grown thanks to the project will be offered to the students of these schools. Furthermore, applied greenhouse production and agriculture training will be provided to young farmers’ clubs formed by students.

The opening ceremony of the project was attended by Ahmet Cemil Miro?lu, the Republic of Turkey’s Ambassador to Nairobi; Chairperson of the Agricultural Sector Steering Committee of Kenya; officials of the Ministry of Education of Kenya; Eyüp Yavuz Ümütlü, T?KA’s Coordinator in Nairobi; the administrators, teachers, and students of the schools; and the parents of students.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Eyüp Yavuz Ümütlü, T?KA’s Coordinator in Nairobi, noted that the project they implemented aimed to provide income to these schools by promoting agricultural production, support the self-sufficiency of the schools, and help local people gain experience in agricultural production under the supervision of the Agricultural Committee of the Nairobi County Assembly, a stakeholder of the project.
