Beirut, 09 February, 2015 - To ensure better implementation of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade, the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the Convention Secretariat, in cooperation with the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture, will organize a sub-regional workshop for Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia Kingdom and Sudan. The workshop will be held in Beirut from 10 to 13 February 2015.
The Rotterdam Convention was adopted by representatives of Parties in September 1998 and entered into force in February 2004. The Convention aims at promoting shared responsibility and cooperative efforts among Parties in the international trade of certain hazardous chemicals in order to protect human health and the environment from potential harm; to contribute to the environmentally sound use of those hazardous chemicals, by facilitating information exchange about their characteristics, by providing for a national decision-making process on their import and export and by disseminating these decisions to Parties.
The workshop aims to familiarize the participants with the objectives, benefits and main obligations of the Convention; to review the national reports on the implementation of the Convention; and to update the National Action Plan for the implementation of the Rotterdam Convention for the participating Parties.
The workshop will also provide a forum for Parties to foster cooperation, share common experiences and discuss challenges facing the implementation of the Convention to come out with appropriate recommendations and measures to overcome the challenges and enhance the implementation of the Convention in the participating Parties.
