Doha, Qatar – Sidra Medicine has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) to accept students into its research externship program.
The MoU is the latest in a series of partnerships lead by Sidra Medicine’s learning and development team, to provide training opportunities for students in Qatar. The externship program will allow for nominated HBKU research students from the College of Science and Engineering, to gain work experience within Sidra Medicine’s Research Department.
Mr. Peter Morris, Chief Executive Officer at Sidra Medicine said: “Our partnership with HBKU is already bringing tremendous benefits for our research students and our research community. We are very proud of our achievements so far and the successes of our research students. We see this development in our relationship will take us even further in developing our research talent, building research capacity in the country, inspiring young people into scientific research and supporting the development of Qatar’s future scientific leaders.”
As part of the MoU, HBKU research students will be assigned supervisors at Sidra Medicine who will be responsible for ensuring students are given the right workplace skills development opportunities, training and access to support systems to complete their externships.
Dr. Mounir Hamdi, Dean of HBKU’s College of Science and Engineering (CSE), said: “The externship program between HBKU and Sidra Medicine enables us to learn from one another, and to lend resources and share technologies that are ultimately vital in our common pursuit towards providing Qatar’s society with access to cutting-edge medical solutions. Qatar ranks as the 13th best healthcare system in the world and the first in the Middle East due to leadership’s visionary investments in the medical sector. Allowing CSE’s students to experience Sidra Medicine’s ultramodern medical technologies will inspire their academic path and, without doubt, reap long-term benefits for healthcare specialists in the country. Both a strong education system and a strong healthcare system are indispensable to a nation’s capacity to advance in all other sectors. This externship agreement constitutes a link between the essential building blocks of Qatar’s development and human capital.”
Dr. Kholode Al Obaidli, Chief Learning Officer at Sidra Medicine said: “Research is one of our three pillars at Sidra Medicine, following patient care and medical education. The MoU with Hamad Bin Khalifa University is further validation of the investment that we are making in opening up avenues for students to attain the right job skills and career development opportunities. Today’s students will play a key role in becoming tomorrow’s advocates, visionaries and pioneers to take Qatar’s national healthcare research agenda forward.”
Sidra Medicine recently announced the appointment of its new Chief Research Officer, Prof. Christof von Kalle and is working towards becoming a beacon of excellence in healthcare research, new therapeutic developments, and building its academic capabilities with the ultimate goal of making significant contributions to Qatar’s healthcare and education system.
