Ras Al Khaimah: The three- day intensive short course on Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology organised by the Advanced Studies Institute of the Ras Al Khaimah Centre for Advanced Materials (RAK- CAM) concluded at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah here Monday evening.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi attended the valedictory function and presented certificates to the participants.

Prof M Samy El-Shal, Director of RAK- CAM and Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University, said that the first course conducted by the the Advanced Studies Institute on nanomaterials and nanotechnology was a great success and was attended by 42 delegates, including researchers, professors and engineers from various universities and institutes in the region.

"New developments and advanced research in nanomaterials and nanotechnology are redefining the frontiers of materials science, necessitating rapid and effective approaches for the education and training of diverse scientists, engineers, and graduate students. RAK- CAM recently launched its Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) to provide education and training in the cutting edge research of advanced materials in the region and beyond," Prof Samy El-Shal added.

The three- day course was aimed at enabling the participants gain knowledge about the fundamental principles, properties and applications of nanomaterials in a wide range of fields such as energy, petrochemicals, hydrocarbon processing, environmental remediation, and water purification.

The classes were conducted by an eminent panel including Prof. Anthony K. Cheetham, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of RAK- CAM and Professor of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge, and Prof. Joydeep Dutta, Director of Nanotechnology Centre, The Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok.

Prof Samy El-Shal said that RAK-CAM will be organizing the second International Workshop on Advanced Materials (IWAM-2010) in Ras Al Khaimah during the period of 21-23 February, 2010.

IWAM-2010 will focus on Nanomaterials and Nanocatalysis for Energy and Environmental Applications, Materials for Solar Energy, Hydrocarbon Processing, Water Purification, Energy Storage and Environmental Remediation
