New Discovery RST Reservoir Saturation Tool Combination Overcomes Economic, Technical Constraints
HOUSTON - Schlumberger Oilfield Services today announced the successful mapping of a water injection profile in an openhole multilateral well. In the first field test of the new Discovery RST* reservoir saturation tool deployed on coiled tubing, three openhole laterals were entered on the first attempt in the Shuaiba well in the Saih Rawl field in Oman.
Prior to implementation of Discovery RST technology, costs for such remedial work with water breakthrough would have included use of a workover rig and killing the well for up to nine days. The Discovery RST technology in conjunction with coiled tubing allows this service to be performed in only one day.
"The new Schlumberger Discovery tool is a technology that PDO is actively pursuing to enhance our ability for surveillance of our numerous multilateral wells and for remedial activities, mainly flow logging, stimulation and water shut-off," said Frits Eulderink, technical director for PDO, Oman. "The trial of this new system in the Saih Rawl field has proven the ability to re-enter the multilateral openhole legs."
Discovery RST technology combines the Schlumberger reservoir saturation tool and Discovery MLT* multilateral technology to guide the RST tool into lateral legs. The RST tool emits neutrons, which interact with the formation and formation fluids. The neutrons activate the oxygen of the water, which then decays and emits gamma rays that are detected by the RST tool.
"This unique reservoir surveillance technology offers a better understanding of the waterflood in multilaterals, horizontal injectors and producers," said Zaki Selim, president, Well Services for Schlumberger Oilfield Services. "Ultimately, our goal is to provide an end-to-end solution that helps PDO meet its production target."
