Abu Dhabi, UAE: - Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), the entity responsible for developing the quality infrastructure in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, recently hosted a regular meeting of its Standing Technical Committee (STC) to examine the progress achieved by the Council’s Standardisation Services Department in developing harmonised applicable standards for various sectors in Abu Dhabi and approved the technical documents presented by specialized work groups.

The meeting was chaired by Engineer Abdullah Hassan Al Muaini, Executive Director of Conformity Scheme Services at QCC, during which he presented a summary of the resolutions and recommendations of the previous meeting of the Committee held in February. Consensus was reached on three technical documents submitted by specialized technical work groups, these being the Abu Dhabi professional qualification requirements for individuals working in the field of cleaning public drinking water tanks, and updated standards for the “Weqaya” food safety logo and for urban street design manual.

Engineer Al Muaini said "The meeting was part of a series on the efforts of the Council to coordinate work between all parties concerned to bring all technical standards into line in order to ensure that they meet the technical documents of sustainable development for the present and future, thus contributing to the role of the QCC specialized technical work groups, comprising experts from government and  private sector, in developing the quality infrastructure in the capital, in line with Abu Dhabi's plan to build a strong and competitive economy.”

Al Muaini  commented that the development of technical documents like these goes through several stages to reach agreement on the final version by all parties participating in the working group, by signing a document of compatibility. He added that the Council is committed to working on periodical and continuous updates whenever necessary.

Abu Dhabi's professional requirements developed for people who work in cleaning public drinking water aquifers, will improve the services provided by individuals working in this field by ensuring their quality, efficiency and capabilities. The technical standards document details the requirements for the cleaning process to maintain health and public safety, by ensuring efficiency, thus contributing to reducing the possibility of contamination as a result of the random cleaning of public drinking water aquifers or by the use of harmful chemicals.

During the meeting, the updated standard of using the “Weqaya” food safety logo was approved, which includes adding standards for children's food that meet all requirements.  In addition it introduces standards for grocery stores and supermarkets in order to encourage trading in food products that meet the standard requirements of “Weqaya”.  This document supports the strategy prepared by the Department of Health in fighting against obesity in the UAE. In addition, it contributes to reducing the rise in the incidence of morbidity and mortality related to chronic diseases.

The parties also approved urban street design manual and also examined the progress achieved by the Standardisation Services Department in developing harmonised standards projects. The Council summarized the projects being handled by the department and their various stages, the participants involved within each working group, and the results expected during the next phase.

The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council was established in 2009 to enable regulatory bodies in Abu Dhabi, to raise the quality of exports and products traded locally, and to promote a culture of quality, industrial development, competitiveness and consumer safety by enabling regulators to develop and implement product safety, legal standards and conformity programs. The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council also sets guidelines and standards to verify that products manufactured and traded in the Emirate conform to the highest standards of safety, quality and conformity.
