This milestone was reached following PDC's recent award of the contract to construct 120,000 tons of cooling capacity on the Crescent of Palm Jumeirah
DUBAI - Palm District Cooling (PDC) has reached a major milestone of commitment to supply 500,000 tons of cooling demand in district cooling to the UAE. This was announced during the recent award of the contract to construct 120,000 tons of cooling capacity in four district cooling plants strategically located on the Crescent of Palm Jumeirah.
PDC was chosen as the preferred supplier for the Palm Jumeirah Crescent and one of its major customers will be the Atlantis Resort. It will produce and distribute chilled water for a total connected capacity in excess of 135,000 refrigeration tons. The capital cost involved in constructing this district cooling system is approximately AED 500,000,000. The construction of the plants and cooling capacity will enable PDC to provide cooling as demand dictates and to provide redundancy for assured supply.
The Chairman of PDC Ahmed Butti Ahmed commented, `We are proud of this remarkable achievement in such a short time. This level of service has propelled PDC to be a major provider of district cooling in the region and the company has already attracted interest from other Gulf States and the African subcontinent'. This level of expansion of the company's business will make PDC one of the largest district cooling providers in the region and probably the World.
PDC produces and distributes chilled water for air-conditioning in residential and commercial developments and provides a cost effective alternative to cooling buildings by conventional methods. The concept is to produce chilled water in centralized plants and distribute this through pipe networks strategically positioned within the development the plants are to serve. PDC portrays itself as a utility service provider rather than a contractor. It will continue to own and operate the plants and network that it constructs and will focus on developing long term relationships with its customers.
Over a short span of 15 months, PDC has commenced construction of several projects including Jumeirah Lake Towers, Palm Jumeirah Trunk and Discovery Gardens. PDC has already successfully commissioned 40,000 tons of connected capacity and is distributing chilled water to its projects at Gardens Residential Development, Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall, Gardens Furnished Apartments and Jumeirah Islands. With the award of this contract to supply the Crescent of Palm Jumeirah PDC has constructed or has under construction district cooling systems capable of providing in excess of 500,000tons of connected demand. Istithmar, the investment company of Dubai's Ports Customs and Free Zone, is 95% shareholder in Palm District Cooling.
On this occasion, PDC awarded the contract to construct the plants for 120,000 tons of cooling capacity for the Crescent of Palm Jumeirah to the consortium of TAS/Adearest. The contract was signed by PDC Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Butti Ahmed, and Keith Evans, Middle East Director for TAS and Ibrahim Sleiman, Director, Special Projects from Adearest. Also present during this signing were Mr. Keith Levers, CEO of PDC, Craig Hurlbert, President and COO of TAS and Gary Hilberg, Vice President Global Sales, TAS.
In awarding this contract to TAS/Adearest, Mr. Ahmed Butti advised that `PDC has recognized the benefit being provided with the combination of local expertise of Adearest and international expertise of TAS and was confident that consortium would deliver a quality project to the required schedule'.
