The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), in coordination and cooperation with the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO), has launched a new initiative to provide medication instruction labels in Braille to help visually impaired patients and blind people read medicine labels independently and without seeking help.
The initiative comes as part of the UAE government's directions to protect their rights of the people of determination and secure a decent life for them through the provision of all appropriate services that help support their capabilities and integrate them into society.
The Braille labeling has been prepared by relevant experts and printed at the printing press of the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination, the UAE’s only facility that provides such service.
MoHAP and ZHO are planning to introduce a social media campaign about the initiative and the names of the participating pharmacies, in addition to a touch point survey that will be taking place to obtain feedback from service users and their families. In the meantime, the ministry will remain in constant contact with pharmacists and pharmaceutical companies to learn about their proposals on the initiative.
Leadership in using Braille labeling
His Excellency Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Prevention’s Public Health Policy and Licenses, stressed the importance of the initiative which comes as part of the directives of the wise leadership to develop and innovate programs for the rehabilitation and integration of blind people into society.
“The UAE is one of the first countries in the world to apply Braille to drug packages, something that constitutes a significant development in the innovation in the pharmaceutical field locally and regionally,” noted Al Amiri noted, explaining that the Braille labeling is available in (Arabic, English, and Urdu languages) to make it easier for blind persons deal with their prescribed medications independently and without seeking help.
Social initiative
H.E Abdullah Al-Humaidan, Secretary-General of the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination, said ZHO always strives to launch initiatives and support any effort that serves the interests of the people of determination, highlighting the importance of the initiative in helping those with visual challenges and blind people read medicine labels independently and without seeking help, underlining that the Organization through its programs and initiatives encourages blind people to learn Braille to enhance their presence within their communities.
Stressing the leadership of the UAE in applying Braille to various areas of life especially in education and health fields and other service sectors related to the daily life of the individuals, Al-Humaidan underscored ZHO’s commitment to fully using its resources and experiences, particularly ZHO’s Braille printing press, in support of the public initiatives that serve the interests of the people of determination.
Concluding his remarks, Al-Humaidan underlined that the people of determination enjoy the best quality and means of care and attention, pursuant to the directives of the state’s wise leadership and HH Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination to realize the Abu Dhabi government's goal of achieving social development that guarantees a decent life for all members of society.
Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination provides a range of integrated services that aim at rehabilitating disabled people, especially blind people, for inclusion into the community. The Organization is concerned with the spread of Braille in public life and all facilities. This is in addition to providing many outstanding services for the visually impaired people, using the UAE’s only printing press that prints educational materials (curricula and teaching aids) for students in general education stages and universities nationwide, besides printing literary materials such as cultural publications and all kind of stories in Braille.
