Dubai: The Lombardy region of Italy is famed for its cuisine, fashion and design and had the privilege to host the eclectic artist, Leonardo da Vinci, for many years of his working life. This year is the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death and his creative genius will be celebrated during Arabian Travel Market next week.

In partnership with eight Lombardy co-exhibitors, the Lombardy region (an area which covers Milan, Lake Como and Lake Garda), the Municipality of Milan and the Montenapoleone District, with the operative support of Explora, will welcome visitors to a dedicated area located inside the Italian Pavilion at ATM. The leading international travel & tourism event in the Middle East is taking place from 28 April to 1 May 2019 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The Italian Pavilion is being hosted by The Italian Government Tourist Board (ENIT).

The contribution of tourism is crucial for the longevity of Lombardy. Outlets, malls and shopping streets attract tourists from all over the world every year, making Lombardy the top Italian region in terms of expenditures by international tourists, and the second region in terms of expenditures by tourists from the Middle East. However, shopping is not the only pull for tourists. Every year, Lombardy hosts the Fashion Weeks, the Furniture Fair and the Fuorisalone, attracting visitors from all over the world, eager to know the last trends.

The Lombardy region wants to become the number one tourist destination in Italy. It has 23 five-star luxury hotels located between Milan, Lake Como and Lake Garda, and 650 four or five star hotels in the wider region, and offers a hospitality industry based on quality. It tops the regional list of number of UNESCO sites in Italy; is the number one agricultural region of Italy and is also the region with the highest number of starred restaurants (60) in 2019.

On Sunday 28 April, the Councilor for Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Fashion of the Lombardy region and the Deputy Major for Culture from Milan will unveil special initiatives, projects and upcoming news for the region in 2019 at ATM.

2019 will see Milan and the wider Lombardy region be the centre of many special events and initiatives taking place to celebrate Leonardo da Vinci’s work to encourage tourists to follow in his footsteps. This will expand to include fashion and design, two of the most dynamic and relevant sectors of the Lombardy economic system, which are internationally recognised for their innovation and quality of production.

Lombardy will also take centre stage at Italy’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. Young Italian designers are being asked to take part in a competition with an overall theme ‘Connecting Spaces’, which is divided into three innovative categories – Crafting, Digital Connecting Spaces, and Design for Human Connection.
