A new surgical technique was successfully performed at Mafraq Hospital
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 7, April 2013. Mafraq Hospital, owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), successfully performed a new surgical technique to treat severe cases of blocked tear ducts. This laparoscopic or "key-hole" surgery allows the surgeon to have an enhanced field of view and therefore increases accuracy. The procedure was conducted for the first time at Mafraq Hospital recently. Doctors successfully expanded and unclogged a 38 year old man's lacrimal duct. This improved technique took two hours to complete and there were no complications following the surgery, unlike traditional methods that have typically caused complications such as bleeding or infection. Some patients may even leave the hospital the same day following surgery. People suffering from blocked tear ducts commonly experience embarrassment from the continuous overflow of tears and discomfort from pain. Surgical treatment is the only way to clear clogged tear ducts.
