First full-featured IBM NetVista S Seriesis the size of the dictionary, ideal for PC deployments where space is limited

Dubai-UAE, October 12th 2002 -IBM announced today that it will be unveiling the first and smallest of its new line of space-saving desktop PCs at GITEX 2002: the NetVista S42. Designed to save space while making no compromises on desktop performance, the S42 takes up to 64 percent less space than traditional IBM desktops – making it ideally suited for businesses of all sizes where space is at a premium, particularly banks, retail outlets, schools, medical offices and small businesses.

Marking the introduction of a new 'S' space-saving series for the IBM NetVista line, the S42 is designed with a sleek space-saving footprint that includes the latest industry-standard technology and IBM's signature PC options for wireless connectivity and simplified data migration and manageability.

The NetVista S42 has dimensions of just 12.2 inches wide by 13.6 inches deep by 3.3 inches high – about the size of a collegiate dictionary – and can be tucked more easily into tight office spaces. Despite this small size, the S42 comes standard with performance features such as an Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, Double Data Rate (DDR) memory up to 2 GB maximum (1) which enables up to two times the performance of SDR memory (2), Integrated Intel Ethernet, Intel Extreme integrated graphics, four USB 2.0 ports in front with two more in back, and hard disk drives with a standard 40GB (3) (high-speed 7200 rpm) as standard and is expandable. The NetVista S42 is also enabled for ImageUltra – IBM's signature image management and data migration solutions.

“The modern office environment is very different from what it was just a few years ago. Organisations are focusing strongly on finding new ways to use technology to increase efficiency and productivity, and cut costs and space. IBM’s NetVista S42 desktop was created to address this need in tight office spaces, while offering fantastic new technologies that are unique to IBM, including sophisticated connectivity, manageability and security features,” said Sameh Farid, regional manager, personal systems group, IBM Middle East.

The S42 also offers two full-height PCI slots and three bays, an industry-standard optical drive and a diskette drive. These features allow customisation and easy upgrading, which is unique for a Small Form Factor PC. The new S series complements the IBM M series of desktops, which are focused on stability and manageability for the enterprise, and the A series, offering great technology at affordable prices.

Complementing New Space-Saving Flat Panel Monitors
The new NetVista S42 is a great complement to IBM's space-saving flat panel monitors. The IBM T560 15-inch monitor is the lightest and thinnest of IBM's flat panel displays, and unlike any other flat panel design, the T560 can tilt forward, smoothly move up and down vertically, or be compressed into tablet form for easy transport. The T560 also easily rotates between portrait and landscape viewing and displays full 8 1/2 inch by 11-inch pages.

Standard Features of the NetVista S42

Recovery and Migration: Outstanding image management and data migration solutions from IBM help businesses of all sizes save time and money, reduce the risk of errors and loss of data, and stay productive. IBM Rapid Restore PC software, a one-button recovery and restore solution, is pre-installed on the hard drive of the NetVista S42, enabling rapid recovery of previously saved data, applications and settings in the event of a software failure. And the NetVista S42 takes full advantage of ImageUltra, patented image management technology and services from IBM that are designed to lower costs by reducing the number of software images an IT manager needs to manage.

ImageUltra is a key component of the IBM suite of migration and uptime offerings, and IBM estimates its savings at up to $100 per PC, while significantly reducing the challenges of PC deployment and image support.

Connectivity: The NetVista S42 is optimised for connectivity, with Intel PRO/1000 MT or VE Network Connection with Wake on LAN (integrated on select models). This high-speed Gigabit Ethernet standard provides speeds up to 10 times faster than existing 10/100 adapter technology to help increase productivity and get information quickly (4). A convenient remote network management capability is also included on the S42.

Wireless: For environments where fixed wiring is not practical or economical, Wi-Fi certified wireless options are available for the S42. Options include the IBM High Rate Wireless LAN PCI Adapter, the IBM High Rate Wireless LAN Access Point 500 and the IBM High Rate Wireless LAN Gateway. The S42 can also connect through a PRO/1000 T Desktop Adapter by Intel.  Another option for connecting wirelessly with the NetVista S42 is the Bluetooth UltraPort Module from IBM.  This option provides for a short-range (up to 30 feet in an open space) wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) or a device-to-device connectivity solution which is great for work group/meeting collaboration.

Security: The NetVista S42 features the Kensington® security slot as well as a slot or an optional padlock to help protect your assets or prevent unwanted end ser alterations. The S42 also comes equipped with preloaded Norton AntiVirus software (OEM edition), which builds a solid defence to help protect against computer viruses (5).

-End-

1.        For NetVista models without a separate video card, memory supports both system and video. Accessible system memory may be up to 64 MB less than the amount stated, depending on video mode.
2.        Actual performance will vary.
3.        GB =1 billion bytes when referring to storage capacity.  Accessible capacity is less.
4.        Data transfer speeds vary and are often less than the maximum possible; requires Gigabit Ethernet support on server and appropriate network infrastructure.

  • Some software may differ from its retail version (if available), and may not include user manuals or all program functionality.  Software license agreements may apply.
