Dubai, Tuesday December 20 Dubai Herbal & Treatment Centre is holding a free awareness open day on nerve and foot complications for diabetics, on Thursday December 22.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine at Dubai Herbal & Treatment Centre (DHTC) frequently complements conventional medicine. The therapies offered at DHTC include Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Rehabilitation, Dermatology and Chiropractic.
Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old Indian system medicine based on the balance of the five basic elements: fire, air, water, earth and vacuum (ether). According to Ayurveda, diabetes is a metabolic kapha (equilibrium of water and earth) type of disorder, in which diminished functioning of agni (digestion) leads towards a tendency of high blood pressure. Ayurveda works by addressing diet modification, eliminating sugar and simple carbohydrates, and emphasizing complex carbohydrates.
The most common complication of diabetes is 'diabetes peripheral neuropathy', which is nerve damage in feet, hands and legs. According to DHTC Rehabilitation Specialist Dr Manoj Kumar, in the US peripheral neuropathy affects about 50 percent of diabetes patients, with one in six developing foot ulcers and 15 percent resulting in amputation.
Rehabilitation helps to alleviate the symptoms of people who have had amputations.
Diabetes is more prevalent in Dubai than most countries in the UAE.
"It is estimated by the Ministry of Health that 25 percent of UAE residents suffer from diabetes, so we want to do our best to ensure people are fully aware of alternative treatments, to help with the symptoms of diabetes," said DHTC Rehabilitation Specialist, Dr Manoj Kumar.
With the theme for this year's World Diabetes Day being 'Put feet first: Prevent amputations', the topic of the DHTC program is 'Awareness of the nerve and foot complications for Diabetics'. The open day will include a free medical check up, free blood sugar estimation, free medical consultation and free yoga demonstration for members of the Indian club. It will provide information about Ayurveda and Rehabilitation therapies for the treatment of foot conditions.
"When somebody is diagnosed with diabetes, after five to six years, they experience serious foot complications commonly resulting in amputation," he said. "We want to educate people in this region about diabetes to help them improve their quality of life."
Members of The Indian Club and the general public have been invited to attend the open day held at DHTC on December 22 from 1-7 pm. On the day Dr Kumar and Ayurveda Specialist, Dr Asha Rani and Yoga expert Mr. Pratheep Kumar will be available to answer any questions. To make a booking please contact 04 335 1200.
