YOUNG CHEFS WALK AWAY WITH CERTIFICATES AND GIFT VOUCHERS

The first group of graduates, part of the 'Sweet Academy' by Abela, was awarded certificates and gift vouchers by the DTCM Manager Events and Chairman of Sweet Surprises Organizing Committee, Mr. Marwan bin Beyat, at the graduation ceremony held yesterday (July 6) at the Deira City Centre.

An initiative by Abela, held as part of the DSS-2004 Sweet Surprises theme week, it ran from July 2 to 6 and attracted eight young enthusiastic children, aged seven to 12, from various nationalities.

The young chefs were taught the art of preparing different kinds of sweets by Abela chefs in addition to being educated about food safety, storage and hygiene.

The graduation ceremony concluded by the cutting of a cake and attracted hundreds of visitors to the venue.

The unique event was organized by Abela, one of the seven support partners of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

The department organized the Sweet Surprises for the second successive year during the annual shopping-cum-indoor entertainment extravaganza.

In addition, Abela organized a series of interesting events and competitions for children which saw them walking away with on-the-spot prizes.

While in one corner of the Deira City Centre, a play on the art of sweet making attracted a large number of visitors, in another corner the Modhesh biscuit decoration initiative kept the children busy trying to use their creativity.

Yet another section of the centre saw free ice creams being distributed while clowns and jugglers roamed around the famous shopping mall to entertain the children of different ages and nationalities throughout the evening.

The chocolate fountain too was a major draw as visitors got to taste marshmallows dipped in free-flowing liquid chocolate. The face painting section attracted a lot of children. However, it was different as all the proceeds were donated to the local charity Beit Al Khair.

Mr. bin Beyat said: "Abela has been a big supporter of our events and their programmes have been entertaining for visitors of all ages and nationalities. We especially laud their efforts to educate the children on the art of cooking food and create awareness about proper food habits."

The 'Sweet Surprises' theme week concludes on July 7. More than 150 events are scheduled to take place during the second edition of Sweet Surprises at nine selected shopping malls with the support and cooperation of seven sponsoring partners and 25 participating hotels.

This year's Sweet Surprises initiative has been allocated AED3.7 million budget, including AED 700,000 in prizes for the children for a variety of entertainment and educational events.
