Seven artists - three from the European Union and four from the Arab world - are sharing their cultural experiences in a Workshop and Art Exhibition 2007 organized by the Delegation of the European Commission in Jordan at Amman's Orfali Art Gallery.
The exhibition, which continues until May 24, is dedicated to the memory of two famous poets, Federico Garcia Lorca, from Granada, who died there and is buried near the Fountain of Ainadamar (Fountain of Tears in Arabic) and the Iraqi Abdul Wahab Al Bayati, who spent the last part of his life in Spain.
As one of the annual major cultural events organized by the EC, it was opened by His Excellency Patrick Renauld, Ambassador of the EC Delegation in Jordan, who said: "Europea and Jordan have much to share and both are outstanding examples of cross-cultural dialogue and interaction, and again this year the European Commission is engaged in a number of cultural activities with Jordanian partners and artists.
"Our purpose is above all to support and engage local groups, especially young people and cultural organizations, in a dialogue which will help us to learn more about our common values, with diversity being a key word in the cultural activities." .
The seven artists drawn together by the exibition are Ghassan Abdulah and Jehad Alameri from Jordan, Mohammed Al-Shammary and Hashim Hanoon from Iraq, Clara Amado from Spain, Melina Nicolaides from Cyprus, and Pietro Calabrese from Italy.
They are working together under the creative spirit of two great figures of common EU and Arab cultural heritage, at a time when the EU is celebrating the Commemoration of Europe Day and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome establishing the basis for the European Union.
It is also the fifth anniversary of the EU-Jordan Association, and celebrates the fact that during the past five years Jordan and the European Union have achieved much together by deepening their cooperation in the different areas of the political, economic and social sectors, at a time when the Barcelona Process is itself being extended and deepened by the new cooperation framework offered by the European Neighbourhood Policy.
An advantage of this new framework is to offer the highest performing countries like Jordan the opportunity to progress even further in economic integration and human exchanges with Europe.
