Industry experts from around the globe gather in Dubai to share knowledge on future innovations in high rise buildings

Dubai, UAE - Dubai Creative Clusters Authority (DCCA), the government regulatory body mandated to foster the economic development of Dubai Creative Clusters, is hosting and endorsing the International Conference on Recent Developments and Innovations in Geotechnics & High Rise Structures in Dubai.

The three-day event that runs from 16 May to 18 May, 2017, at the Marriott Hotel Al Jaddaf, is being organised by MIDAS, the leading provider of CAE software for bridge, building, geotechnical and mechanical engineering.

With international experts, industry leaders and academics providing keynotes and presentations, and running workshops, the primary objective of the conference is to create a platform to enable new advances and innovation in structural and geotechnical engineering. Speakers will exchange knowledge, insights and best practices from around the world on critical subjects ranging from 2D & 3D modelling in deep excavations, the art of structural design, challenges for tall building foundation design and much more.

Mohamed Al Bahri, Chief Officer of Zoning and Commercial Affairs at Dubai Creative Clusters Authority(DCCA), said: “Through the sharing of knowledge and best practices, this event aims to support the unprecedented growth that we are witnessing in the construction sector both in the emirate and across the UAE. It will add value in developing smart infrastructure and advance much-needed technological skills and capabilities in this sector. We are proud to support this event in line with our mandate and Dubai Plan 2021 as it aims to ensure world-class infrastructure through encouraging the improvement of the quality, technical applications and innovative practices in building sites across Dubai.”

This fast-growing sector enjoys a strategic significance in Dubai’s economy proven by the fact that the emirate is home to one in every five of the world's top 100 super-tall completed skyscrapers.

He added: “Dubai has achieved impressive feats in the structural and geotechnical engineering disciplines, with record-shattering structures such as the Burj Khalifa. In order to continue reaching new heights, we need to empower industry leaders by creating a space where they can share ideas and exchange tools and techniques.”

Ravi Kiran Anne, Director at MIDAS IT, Dubai, said: “This event serves as an excellent platform for civil engineering fraternity to share their expertise & practical knowledge on current design practises followed to design High Rise Structures in Dubai.”

Speakers on day one include the Chairperson of the conference, Professor Rolf Katzenbach, TU Darmstadt, Germany, as well as Professor Harry Poulos, University of Sydney, Australia, Professor Michał Topolnicki from Gdansk University of Technology, Professor Saad Aiban, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia and Professor Ayman Hussein Hosny Khalil, Ain Shams University, Egypt, Dr Andrew Smith, Coffey UK and Dr Ahmed Al Kadi, Deltares Institute, Netherlands.

On the second day, Professor Harry Poulos will lead a workshop to work towards the adoption of a methodology that allows for more economical foundations to be designed. The third and final day will be dedicated to a site tour of the ICD Brookfield Place, owned by Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) and Brookfield, and home to the deepest basement in Dubai.
