Dubai, UAE: UAE-based Traffic Digital has created an emotional installation to highlight the plight of millions of schoolchildren in conflict zones around the world.

The installation – created for UNICEF – was unveiled at Palma de Mallorca airport ahead of and during the Third International Safe Schools Conference, to advocate for education to be protected during armed conflict.

‘The Class of No Tomorrow’ 3D sculptured installation was built using materials from schools that were destroyed or damaged from targeted and indiscriminate attacks in Iraq, Nigeria, South Sudan and Ukraine. The wooden sculptures featured in the design represent the schoolchildren in each of the countries who are at risk of injury or death as they strive to get an education.

The sculptures stand against the backdrop of a digital chalkboard which features images and text telling the children’s stories, as well as conveying messages of hope and determination.

The installation is located in the baggage claim area of the airport between 24 and 31 May 2019 and aims to reiterate the importance of the conference to officials travelling there and encourage member states who have endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration to recommit to its promises.

All those travelling through the airport are encouraged to share pictures across social media using the hashtags #ChildrenUnderAttack and #SafeSchoolsDeclaration – urging governments who have not yet signed the declaration to do so.

UNICEF and other organisations are urging more countries to sign the declaration, and in turn make schools a safer place for children living in conflict zones.

“By developing this project in collaboration with UNICEF we are able to highlight the atrocities schoolchildren living in conflict face. That’s why this project is so important to Traffic,” explains Sophia Kenvold, the Regional Head of Marketing at Traffic Digital. “These attacks are putting our future generations at risk and it is everyone’s job to do everything they can to protect them. I hope with this campaign we can positively influence not only the delegates, but the general public, on the impact these attacks have on children and their education as a whole.”

The International Safe Schools Conference will take place on 28 - 29 May 2019, countries in attendance will include Norway, Denmark, Nigeria, Iraq, Spain, Afghanistan, UK, Côte D’Ivoire, Argentina, Somalia and Ukraine.

About the Safe Schools Declaration:

The Safe Schools Declaration is a political commitment to better protect students, teachers, schools and universities during armed conflict. The Declaration was opened for state endorsement at an international conference held in Oslo, Norway, in May 2015.

Governments that endorse the Declaration agree to follow set guidelines that include; commitment to improve reporting of attacks on education, investigate and prosecute alleged war crimes involving schools and restore access to education faster when schools are attacked.

Research recently released by the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) shows that deliberate and indiscriminate attacks on schools and universities, their students, and staff

have become more widespread over the last five years, with more than 12,700 attacks occurring from 2013 through 2017 and harming more than 21,000 students and educators. A pattern of attacks on schools occurred in at least 28 countries experiencing armed conflict and insecurity.
