The Dodge-Mountain High team from Dubai comprising of ten UAE based women have won gold in the ladies category at the 54th Nehru Trophy held on 12th August. The Dodge-Mountain High team joined 25 other women from the Alleppey Boat Club in Kerala to race in the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Cup.
Julie Amer, founder of Mountain High, supported by Dodge took a team of multi-national women from Dubai to row with the all women's team from the Alleppey Boat Club in Kerala. The team members were Sharon Codyre, Melissa Garring, Karen Gunning, Robyn Parker, Louisa Harris, Lea Radcliffe, Wai Yin Chang, Dana Annab and Britta Misch. Prior to the event , the Dodge-Mountain High team spent 4 days of hard training in Kerala with the local team. All in all, it was a week long trip for the UAE women, who spent part of their stay experiencing life on the River, by living on a traditional houseboat and getting to know the local life and culture.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is the first in a series of water based activities that are the initiative of Dodge-Mountain High.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is world famous and held on the second Saturday of every August. It is a prestigious cultural event that attracts people from all over the world, and takes its name from the late Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who donated the trophy to the winners of the first boat race held in 1952 in honour of his visit to the region. The race begins with a dazzling pageant of water floats, performing arts and boats decorated with colourful parasols.
The snake boat (Chundan Vallam) race is the largest team sport in the World. The boats are handcrafted from wood without a single nail and powered by 125 oarsmen who are fuelled by the songs of 25 others and cheered on by thousands of ecstatic spectators. The term snake boat comes from its stern, which represents the raised hood of a snake, its length is usually 50 - 100 ft.
Mountain High is known for its pioneering adventure challenges and this event fits perfectly with the Company's ethos to encourage, inspire and motivate women to be more active in the great outdoors and connect and unite cultures through sport and adventure.
It is the first time in the history of the Nehru Cup that a team of foreign women have participated. The Dodge-Mountain High team joined forces with the local team at Alleppey who have won the ladies category for the last three years - so expectations were high!

We are definitely going back next year - hopefully with a full team from the UAE" says Julie. "It's has also been a great opportunity to connect our respective cultures and countries and it has been a fantastic learning experience for all of us.
