Recognizing the multi-faceted development project at Salman Bay in Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Housing in Bahrain has awarded COWI with the award for 'Best Master Planned Community'.

The ceremony took place in Bahrain´s capital Manama on Monday 27 September and was run in parallel with the Affordable Housing Development Summit for the Middle East. A prominent crowd of the Gulf region´s most influential governmental and private sector decision makers were gathered this evening, including Shaikh Ebrahim bin Khalifa al Khalifa, Minister of Housing in Bahrain, who presented the five different awards, each prize setting standards for excellence in the building industry in the Middle East. The winners were judged by an esteemed panel of regional and international industry experts, having juggled for months with the five different categories 'Best New Project - completed', 'Best Sustainable Development', 'Best New Project - Planned', 'Best Community Experience' and 'Best Master Planned Community'.

COWI´s award winning master planning project: Salman Bay
Salman Bay is situated in North Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and COWI's project team, which included Master Planning, Architectural, MEP, Transport and Traffic Departments as well as Marine, in association with the client´s economic and market analyst sub-consultants, have designed a concept master plan for a 72 sq km development at the bay to the Red Sea. The concept includes, among others, mixed use retail and commercial centres, residential, community facilities, marinas and iconic tourist facilities, along with multiple bayside resort developments.

In undertaking the significant project, COWI has called upon its varied in-house specialist disciplines in the field of master planning, urban design and landscape, architecture, transportation, marine and MEP (HVAC & public health) engineering.

Key to success: Detailed knowledge of local markets and an aim for clients´ need
"It's a real honour to accept this award on behalf of COWI as it recognises not only a prestigious master planning project of ours in the region but also honours a diverse COWI team and its efforts to create a highly modern tourist and residence development, embracing both exclusive details and functionality," COWI´s Head of Master Planning Department, Nathan Cox, said after the ceremony.

"Our detailed knowledge of local markets together with an understanding of our clients´ needs, being our primary focus in everything we do, has been key in enabling us to understand and meet the market demands for a project like Salman Bay. This, combined with the ability to draw on the expertise of our multi-faceted, high-quality team, is proving to be a real recipe for success for COWI."
