Five tips from Bayt.com to prepare yourself for Careers UAE
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: No matter what stage of your career you are in - a fresh graduate ready to jump into the workforce or an experienced professional exploring various options in the job market - attending a career fair can be invaluable. Learn about new ways to market yourself, polish your interviewing skills or build and expand your business network at Careers UAE 2015, the UAE's leading recruitment, training and education exhibition for Emirati nationals running 28 - 30 April at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Bayt.com, the Middle East's premier recruitment portal, offers job candidates five top tips below to make the most of a visit to Careers UAE and increase your chances of being noticed by potential employers:
1. Do your homework: Research the companies and organisations that are scheduled to attend, particularly those that might be of interest to you. What is their corporate culture? Where is the office located? Who is the management? Do you know of any friends or acquaintances working for your potential employer? Reach out to them and find out what it's like. Do you envision yourself being part of their team? Are you the right fit for them? And most importantly - are they the right fit for you? Know what you want - define your goals and work towards achieving them.
2. Prepare your toolkit: Create or update your resume and hand out copies to your target companies. Don't use a one-size-fits-all approach - tailor your CV to the company, field or industry that you are targeting, and highlight the experience that is most relevant to that particular position. If you are a fresh graduate with no experience, or a career-changer with experience outside your field of interest, consider playing up your school or other unpaid experience, or focusing on your transferrable skills. Did you, perhaps, win a photography, marketing, programming or writing competition at university? Do you have any relevant unpaid experience - internships or volunteer work? How effective were you at communicating, leadership, and teamwork in your previous role? Have someone you trust - a colleague, instructor or a friend - review your CV. Alternatively, pass by Bayt.com's Career Booth at Careers UAE to receive feedback from the experts.
3. Practise your elevator speech and formulate a list of Q&As: First impressions are of utmost importance - you just have a few minutes, so make them count. Prepare an introduction that is short, concise and to the point, and one that piques an employer's interest. Be curious - good questions can help demonstrate your interest in the business and the job. Also, be ready for an-on-the-spot interview and practise your answers to the most common questions. Why do you want this job? Why should we hire you? Where do you see yourself in five years? What is your greatest professional achievement?
4. Dress to impress and demonstrate good manners: Your interactions with employers at Careers UAE are impromptu interviews - dress the part. Be polite and professional, watch your body language and posture, and speak clearly and confidently. You never get a second chance to make a first impression - master your interpersonal skills. And though this might seem like a no-brainer, make comfortable business-appropriate shoes a priority.
5. Follow up within 48 hours: Request business cards from people you meet, jot down a few notes after each conversation and send thank you emails to contacts you've made. Don't be disappointed if you don't receive a response, but don't discount this opportunity to move your CV to the top of the pile. If you are interested in a company, be proactive and apply for job vacancies online as well.
