In recognition of his contributions to the Telco sector in the Arab region and Lebanon
Beirut: Alfa's Chairman and CEO, Mr. Marwan Hayek has won the "Telecommunications Man of the Year" award in the Arab region at the seventh Pan Arab Web Awards ceremony that took place in Beirut.
The "Pan Arab Web Awards" honor Arab executives who have contributed, through their achievements, to the development of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. This year the awards ceremony was attended by executives from Alfa and Orascom Telecom, the leading Egyptian telco operator managing Alfa since February 2009, and on top of the attendees, was Mr. Naguib Sawiris, founder of Orascom Telecom Holding.
Mr. Hayek has been granted the award this year for his achievements and dedication throughout the past sixteen years of his career servicing the Telco sector, contributing to the sector's development in Lebanon and the Arab region. Commenting on the win, Mr. Naguib Sawiris said: "This award today comes to testify to the excellence and creativity that Marwan has long shown in the field of his work. Those are the merits that have made Marwan one of the top executives of our group, making us proud of him being part of our team."
In a Word of Thanks, Mr. Hayek said: "Honoring me today is honoring the path of all young Lebanese professionals working in this field, who travelled to the world to lay the foundations for the state-of-the-art telecommunication networks complying to the highest standards, while still dreaming of returning to their homeland."
Mr. Hayek further added, "From my position in Lebanon at Alfa, and thanks to Orascom Telecom, the mother company that has supported me and gave me the opportunity to offer this sector the best I could through the missions assigned to me in several countries, and with the collaboration of the Lebanese Ministry of Telecommunications, we are working on introducing the 3.5G technology in Lebanon... This technology will fuel economic growth in Lebanon, help create new job opportunities, and contribute to the development of SMEs."
Mr. Hayek further thanked the event organisers for this honor, and all the people who stood by his side throughout his career and in particular, Mr. Naguib Sawiris, his family and every person who has contributed to his success over these years.
Mr. Hayek's career in the Telco sector, which started more than sixteen years ago, is full of achievements. It began in 1995 with Mr. Hayek's participation in building the first GSM mobile network in Lebanon, known today as "Alfa". In 1999, Mr. Hayek joined the Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH) family, where he held various positions within the company's subsidiaries and the Holding company, contributing to Orascom Telecom's growth and development which helped increase the number of OTH-subscribers to more than 100 million today.
