One decade since its first residents moved in, Oman’s leading Integrated Tourism Complex (ITC), Al Mouj Muscat, has released its first annual sustainability report. The report gives a detailed breakdown of the award-winning destination’s highlights to date, as well as a snapshot of future ambitions as part of its overarching masterplan.

Currently around 44% of the overall development of the masterplan is complete and work continues to accelerate. In the past few months, not only have the Mysk Al Mouj and Kempinski Muscat hotels opened their doors, but the site also recently celebrated the opening of Muscat’s first public square – Marsa Plaza. Al Mouj Muscat also has a number of new hotels planned, a new community hub for both residents and visitors to enjoy and a number of new dining offerings set to open later this year.

These announcements are the latest in Al Mouj Muscat success story, which touches on a number of areas, including not only economic growth, but also contribution to tourism, and its dedicated focus on eco-friendly living. Key highlights over the past decade include:

  • Al Mouj Muscat has created over 6,000 jobs directly or indirectly with 63% Omanisation.

  • Attracted over 25m OMR of foreign investment to date.

  • Over 5,000 residents from 70+ nationalities live in Al Mouj Muscat community.

  • 94% of spending is on locally based suppliers.

  • Dedicated SME support with 34 SMEs operating within Al Mouj and the ITC supporting more than 120 overall, together with a regular market in winter months featuring local retailers.

  • More than 30 awards in the last 10 years across the destination for 30 local, regional and international awards for design excellence, master planning, and leisure facilities.

  • An annual footfall of 3.2 million at The Walk – with an average 10,000 visitors a day to the 70 retail and dining outlets.

  • AL Mouj has supported over 150 direct and indirect CSR initiatives with more than 2.5m OMR raised.

  • Al Mouj Muscat is one of the first ITCs in the region to reach 70 million man-hours without a lost time incident (LTI).

Contribution to tourism

Al Mouj Muscat is also dedicated to supporting the wider Oman Vision with tourism a key focus. This year saw the opening of the Mysk Al Mouj (195 rooms) and Kempinski Muscat hotels (310 rooms) with five more hotels to come. As part of its contribution to international sports tourism, 2018 has already experienced great successes. The Al Mouj Muscat Marathon saw a 600% growth in runners from 2017 and the first ever European Tour event – NBO Oman Open taking place at Al Mouj Golf was screened in 150 countries. Al Mouj Muscat also recently launched the Jewel of Muscat memorial on Marsa Promenade, the first piece of public art by a private development, highlighting a key moment in Oman’s maritime history, for visitors from all over the world to enjoy.

Leading the way in eco-friendly living

For those who have visited Al Mouj Golf, it is probably no surprise to hear that more than 170 species of birds have been seen there – either using it as a permanent residence or as part of their migration patterns. The Golf Course, has been awarded GEO Environmental Certification and like much of Al Mouj Muscat, has strict waste management KPIs with water, energy and waste reduction all areas that have their own dedicated programmes. In addition Al Mouj Marina has received a number of environmental awards in recognition of its sustainability credentials – including International Clean Marina Accreditation.
