Manama, AGU: Princess Al Jawhara Al Ibrahim Centre for Molecular Medicine, Genetics and Inherited Disorders (ACMID) at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has recently launched a series of activities within the National Campaign to Raise Awareness on Rare Diseases.

Organised by the Centre for the ninth consecutive year, the campaign is held simultaneously with the World Disease Day, which is globally observed on February 28 every year, and comes under the theme "Show Your Rare…Show You Care" this year.

Through these activities, ACMID, which specialises in genetic diseases, seeks to exert its efforts and expertise to raise more awareness of such diseases, which affect one person out of every 2,000 people in the world, while the number of people with rare diseases in the Arab world is around 15 million people.

It's noteworthy that most of the rare diseases are considered to have a genetic origin with which the patient suffers from birth. However, some symptoms do not appear until at a later age, so the global campaign for awareness of rare diseases seeks to raise awareness of these diseases by creating a database in the health system for rare diseases, and the inclusion of examination of rare diseases within the marriage examinations and examining rare diseases as part of the new-born examinations.

On this occasion, Medical Genetics Consultant at ACMID and Head of the Awareness Campaign Dr Christina Skrypnyk explained that this year's activities seek to continue efforts to highlight rare disease patients and their needs for health and social support.

Dr Skrypnyk added that the Centre looks forward to raising more awareness on rare diseases and building solid bridges between the academic, health and community sectors in a way that serves rare disease patients.

The Consultant expressed gratitude and appreciation to the continued support offered by AGU through the University's national and regional efforts to raise awareness on rare diseases, adding that she is looking forward that these efforts will result in raising more awareness of rare diseases in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

This year, the campaign will include several awareness-raising activities, such as displaying stories of rare diseases patients or their families through social media, holding competitions and direct debates for students of the College of Medicine and Medical Science in the University, as well as holding a virtual gathering for patients and parents of people with rare diseases, that is in addition to s series of interviews about rare diseases and their impact on society, and the interviews will broadcasted on the official page of ACMID on Instagram (@aljawharabh).
