AMMAN – Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum (TAG-KF), a member of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG.Global), hosted the 2021 Sumo Robot Competition organized by the National Institute for Robotics and Technology (NIRT) under the auspices of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh University College for Innovation (TAGUCI). 

More than 40 students from different age groups, divided to ten groups, have participated in the contest; and competed for “Champion of the Sumo Robot” title.

During the opening ceremony, HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, founder and chairman of TAG.Global, stressed the importance of holding such challenging and creative competitions in the field of technology and innovation, affirming that the Arab world is rich in creative prople, and indeed innovators, who just need the appropriate environment and incubator for harvesting their creative skills.  

He also announced that TAGUCI does  provide such an environment, to stimulate creativity through training and the academic programs it offers, in addition to its Business Incubator that supports innovators and inventors.

For his part, Eng. Tareq Nawaiseh, NIRT director, highlighted the importance of these competitions in discovering, developing and supporting talented children and youth, noting that the world today and tomorrow is embracing digitalization and Artificial Intelligence.

Furthermore, Nawaiseh stated that the competition is very exciting and challenging,  requesting every team to design a (20x20cm) 3kg robot based on a set of physical-mechanical principles, and in programming them according to a specific algorithm that enables the robot to use sensor readings and detect an object in proximity. Then, the opponent robots would try to force each other out of the ring to win the contest.

At the end of the competition and after evaluating the participating designs of robots, top-winners were honored and received medals and certificates from Eng. Nawaiseh,  Mr. Mamoun Abu al-Sebaa', TAGUCI Assistant Dean for Management and External Relations, and Mr. Fadi Daoud, Smart Education Executive Director at TAG.Global.
