Initiative funded during the holy month by HSBC, supported by UAE Red Crescent and Fujairah Welfare
Dubai, UAE, (13 August 2012): ICDL GCC Foundation, the governing body and certification authority of the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) announced that 72 economically underprivileged boys and girls from the emirates of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah received ICDL computer skills through funding from HSBC Bank UAE. The generous move by HSBC coincides with the holy month of Ramadan and is attributed to the delivery of edutainment events engaging these youngsters in a mixture of fun and learning activities, complemented with valuable gifts from sponsors from several corporate citizens of various industries.
These ICDL activities were coordinated in partnership with the Fujairah Welfare Association in Fujairah and the UAE Red Crescent in Ras Al Khaimah; and carried out at the Fujairah College in Fujairah and Ibn Majid International Centre in Ras Al Khaimah. All participating students received intensive computer training based on the international ICDL standards over a four week period and sat for the official ICDL exams to qualify for the worldwide recognized ICDL certification.
This support of HSBC Bank came in response to a call from ICDL GCC Foundation to intensify efforts and continue to strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors to support digital literacy initiatives in the Gulf States. ICDL GCC continues to cooperate with governments and corporate citizens to develop similar initiatives aimed at promoting digital awareness among all social groups, including school students, parents, women, retirees, people with special needs, as well as the economically disadvantaged and prison inmates.
