The dramatic rescue of a young boy who was saved from drowning by his alert sibling in a swimming pool at a hotel property in Ras Al Khaimah once again puts the spotlight on the responsibilities of parents and authorities in public and private swimming pools. With temperatures climbing, more people — especially children — are going swimming. Many children do not know how to swim. The role of parental supervision must therefore be strictly stressed. Children must never be allowed to enter the water unaccompanied. Guardians must be well-versed in the environment around the pool. Instructions must be read carefully and safety procedures followed, irrespective of whether the child knows how to swim or not.

Children need constant supervision, especially by someone who knows how to swim, around the water — whether it be a swimming pool, beach, bath or a wading pool. The concept of ‘touch’ supervision, presence of an adult swimmer within arms’ reach, must be strictly followed. Security fences to prevent children from loitering undetected into swimming pool complexes must also be set up, coupled with the presence of alert lifeguards and safety equipment. Swimming is a recreational activity provided rules are obeyed.
