Dubai: Instant yeast products sold in Dubai are free of lard, the Dubai Municipality clarified on Thursday.

The Food Safety Department of the municipality rebutted rumours circulating on social media that a food additive in instant yeast products in the market is derived from pork fat, which is not halal.

The additive in question is sorbitan monostearate, an emulsifier coded as E491, which is used in manufacturing food and health care products.

In response to what is circulated on social media, Khalid Mohammad Sharif Al Awadi, the director of the Department, stated that all laboratory test results have confirmed that instant yeast products in the market are free from pork fat.

He also denied the presence of any impurities or carcinogenic substances in food products registered in the emirate.

“The Municipality is making efforts to maintain public health from any risks. [It] has appointed inspectors in all areas concerning protection of public health in terms of waste, food or pest control,” stated Al Awadi.

He said that food products are constantly being tested and monitored to make sure they are free from components dangerous to consumer health and safety.

The official urged the public not to be deceived by baseless rumours on social media.
