As businesses try to restart the economy while coronavirus cases are still on the rise, Emirates Airlines has upped its offering by giving customers a chance to upgrade their frequent-flyer status and enjoy more travel-related perks without even purchasing a ticket or boarding a plane.

In a first, members of the carrier’s loyalty program can now earn 25 percent bonus Tier Miles, not just Skywards Miles, when they purchase something online or at accredited retail outlets in the

UAE during the coronavirus pandemic, the airline said in a statement.

Airline loyalty programs have been popular among people who travel quite a lot, as they offer the chance to upgrade seats to business, earn travel tickets or access premium lounges. Customers are assigned different Tiers, depending on the size of their spending: Blue, Silver, Gold or Platinum.

Tier Miles are the bonus points that airline customers can collect to help move up their membership tiers. Traditionally, customers could earn such points only when they fly with Emirates, flydubai or a codeshare flight that carries an Emirates flight number (EK).

Emirates, along with other airlines, has recently resumed a few cancelled flights as economies around the world try to restart from coronavirus lockdowns.
