UAE - Nightclubs in Abu Dhabi are shut from Friday as a preventive measure against Covid-19, the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) said in a circular.

The DCT has called for 'strict adherence' to the shutdown with immediate effect.

"Kindly note that DCT inspectors will be visiting tourism establishments to ensure adherence to instructions," the DCT informed general managers of tourism establishments and event organisers.

The restrictions are in place till end of the month and there will be weekly updates as the situation develops.

"Your compliance is highly anticipated and required, noting that legal measures will be taken against any violators pursuant to applicable legislation," the circular warned.

It is learnt that the shutdown of nightclubs is on those facilities where dance activities and large gatherings are expected. However, pubs where only alcohol is served function normally. "All our clubs are shut until further notice. However, pubs are open. We have to avoid large gatherings," a manager of hotel chain said.

These directives follow the ban imposed on hotels and cafes from serving shisha.

As of Thursday, the Ministry of Health and Prevention announced 11 new cases of Covid-19 taking the overall number to 85 in the UAE.
