MANAMA: Seven hundred more volunteers have stepped forward for phase three clinical trials of a potential Covid-19 vaccine, the Health Ministry said last night.

Authorities on Wednesday increased the target number of volunteers by 1,700 after achieving its earlier goal of 6,000 participants in randomised trials of Sinopharm’s Covid-19 potential vaccine.

The initiative was launched in the kingdom on August 10 under the campaign “#4 Humanity”.

Anyone aged 18 and above who wishes to volunteer can go to Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre (hall 4) between 8am and 8pm.

The ministry also said Bahrain registered 586 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, alongside 635 recoveries and three fatalities.

Two men – a Bahraini, 80, and an expat, 68, – and a Bahraini woman, 72, died from the coronavirus, taking the death toll to 242.

The ministry revealed that of yesterday’s 586 new cases, 144 were expatriate workers, 433 contacts of local cases and nine travel-related.

It said an additional 635 people recovered, taking the total to 62,887.

It added that of the 6,232 active cases, 153 were receiving treatment and 61 in critical condition.

Bahrain has so far registered a total of 69,361 cases, including active cases, recoveries and deaths. The kingdom has also conducted 1,407,572 tests for the coronavirus.
