Major General Mohammed Al Zafeen, Head of Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Commander in Chief of Dubai Police for Operations Affairs, has said that the recent reduction in speed limits on two key roads in Dubai was to ensure the safety of road users.

Taking to Twitter to explain future plans for any similar changes, the official said:

"The reason behind reducing speed limits from 120kmph to 110kmph was to protect lives."

Earlier in October, Dubai Police reduced the speed limits on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road from 120kmph to 110 kmph.

Talking about the scope of the study, data will be collected to compare the impact of the change in speed limits, covering a period of six months before October 15 and five to six months after the change (March 15), he tweeted on Friday.

"If the result after the comparison is negative or equal onMarch 15, I promise to work with our brothers at RTA to revert the speed limits to what they were before," he noted.

Commenting on sharing the data collected, Al Zafeen said:

"Based on the 5-6 month long study, the success of the reduction will be determined based on accidents and deaths. I will share the results in a transparent manner."
