The offences against property topped the types of crimes committed in 2020, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) in its recent annual report.

As per the statistics, 4,335 cases of offences against property were reported in 2020, followed by offences against persons (3,242), offences against public administration (838), offences against chastity and public morality (599), narcotic offences (1,931), liquor and drunkenness (615), violation of the law (4,134) and firearms-related (53).

Among males, most of the offenders were in the age group 30-39 (5,816) and charges against them include offences against property, persons, and violation of the law.

Among females, most of the offenders were in the age groups 30-39 (625) and 18-29 (496). The main charges against females were offences against persons, property, and offences against chastity and public morality.

Overall, 11,312 crimes were committed by 16,665 offenders in 2020 in the Sultanate. Of these, 53 per cent of crimes were committed by non-Omanis and 47 per cent by citizens.

Among governorates, 3,810 of 11,312 crimes were committed in Muscat, 1,699 in Dhofar, 1,578 in North Batinah and 928 in South Batinah.

The majority of the victims were the public (5,020) while 336 victims were from the private sector.
