Indian nationals seeking employment in Oman and 17 other countries will now have to register online at the Indian government’s eMigrate portal.
If Indian nationals fail to register themselves starting from January 1, 2019, they will be offloaded by the appropriate authorities at the airports, a notice issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in India said.
The 18 countries include Oman, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Thailand, UAE and Yemen.
“Starting from 01.01.2019, no Indian emigrant holding Non-Emigration Check Required (Non-ECR) passport, would be allowed to go the 18 countries for employment, without prior registration in eMigrate, as a measure of extending protection and ensuring their welfare overseas. Off-loading of unregistered Non-ECR emigrants at the airports, would be effected by the appropriate authorities after 1 January, 2019,” the notice said.
For registration, Indian citizens can visit www.emigrate.gov.in and enter their details at the link “ECNR Registration”, and follow the steps to fill the registration form. On successful completion of registration, the emigrant would receive an SMS/email, the announcement said.
It is to be noted that the registration must be completed 24 hours prior to their departure.
"The said registration of Non-ECR passport holders will be mandatory and required to be completed at least 24 hours prior to the actual departure," read the notice.
The new rule by the government of India is to provide protection and welfare to their emigrants abroad, according to the notice.
