Bahraini MPs yesterday voted retrospectively to give the government the green light to strip the nationality of Bahrainis who join a foreign military, help an enemy country, harm the country’s interests or commit terrorist acts.

The amendments to the 1963 Nationality Law, which allows the Cabinet to approve the revocation, was issued by His Majesty King Hamad during Parliament’s recess in October.

Some MPs said revoking nationalities flouted international law and was “inhumane”, with Fadhel Al Sawad saying citizenship was a right and not a gift.

However, foreign affairs, defence and national security committee chairman Mohammed Al Sissi said people harming the country’s interests didn’t deserve Bahraini citizenship. It will be now reviewed by the Shura Council.
