Bahrain's role in the regional maritime security is 'pivotal', without which the coalition against threats at sea 'would be worse off’, said the official at the helm of the UK Navy in Bahrain.

In an exclusive interview with the GDN, Commodore Gordon Ruddock, the commander of Bahrain-based International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC), reiterated the importance of ‘coalitions’, highlighting the successful contribution of the partners.

His sentiments on the united efforts of allies at the IMSC were echoed by Royal Bahrain Naval Forces (RBNF) Flotilla Commander Commodore Yousif Ahmed Al-Mannaie and IMSC Deputy Commander US Navy Captain Alan Baca.

The IMSC was set up in July 2019 in response to an increase in threats to vessels at sea, especially from Iran.

“Our situational awareness of sea would be reduced and we wouldn’t have that that regional expertise (without Bahrain),” said Cdr Ruddock, adding that the US and the UK navies were ‘visitors’ and ‘amateurs’ in the area amidst expert allies including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

“Without their insight and expertise we would be in a much worse position - so ‘thank you very much’ for all the contribution that the ships make on a daily basis and also the contribution of staff and officers because they are really high quality individuals,” he said.

“Coalitions are successful – like-minded nations coming together with a unified purpose – and we prove it every day here in the region.”

Cmd Al-Mannaie believes the flexible nature of the IMSC remains crucial in securing and maintaining regional maritime security. “We understand that single countries would not able to maintain this level of security, hence the importance of allies and friendly forces working together,” he added.

Cpt Baca said the IMSC ensured ships felt ‘comfortable’ coming in and out of the area.

“It is so much more effective when we all work together,” he explained.

“We make sure that our friends and family all over the world can get the things they need to do their jobs and to enjoy their lives.”
