The planned Parliament session tomorrow is expected to go ahead online despite around 60 MPs and employees being placed in quarantine.

It is being reviewed and a final decision will be taken shortly before the session is due to start.

“Due to the extreme circumstances we have spoken to the general secretariat and the Health Ministry and the intention is that the session should go on as Parliament works to serve the people,” said the source.

The GDN has learnt that only Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal, or one of her two deputies, will be present in the chamber on Tuesday and will manage things online.

However, an urgent request by MPs, led by Khalid Bu Onk, had been made to postpone the session.

Mr Bu Onk said 20 MPs have been asked to show up for testing at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

“Tonight there could be more, besides employees,” he told the GDN. “We believe the session shouldn’t go ahead until things become clearer. Any MP in quarantine is on ‘sick leave’ so how is the session going ahead with the possibility that the 21-member quorum out of 40 wouldn’t be met?”
