Qatar Rail has signed agreements totally worth over $32 billion, in order to proceed with the Doha Metro Project, Hamad Al-Bishri, deputy CEO and chief program officer, Qatar Rail, said while speaking at Trans4 2013 -- Qatar's International Transport and Logistics Industry Exhibition on Wednesday.

"Today, we are proud to announce that we have officially begun work for the setup of the metro stations in 20 out of 25 locations, and started with the preliminary drilling works for the metro tunnels reaching close to 5 meters in depth in some locations -- in key areas, in hopes that Phase 1 of the Doha Metro will be completed in 2019," Al-Bishri added.

Similarly, we are moving ahead at great speed with The Lusail Light Rail Transit, slated to be officially delivered by end of 2016; having already finalized the drilling works for the project's tunnels, we've completed over 55 percent of the drilling works for its stations.

Jassim Seif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, Qatar's Minister of Transport, and Abdul Rahim Naqi, secretary general, Federation of GCC Chambers, were present at the meeting.

"We, at Qatar Rail, recognize the importance of partaking in Qatar's International Transport and Logistics Industry Exhibition, Trans4 2013, and the significance of this event in attracting regional and international key players, decision-makers, and professionals in the transport and logistic field," Al-Bishri said.

Trans4 has now become both a reference and a platform for the industry, showcasing Qatar's current and future plans in the transport and shipping sector before international companies and institutions, and allowing the latter to discuss untapped investment opportunities in this dynamic industry that makes a strategic contributor to social and economic development, Al-Bishri said.

"We trust in that the conference will give room to discuss challenges and obstacles faced by key stakeholders in the transport, railway and logistics fields. Looking forward, we hope it will also allow them to identify their aspirations and opportunities in building integrated infrastructures for core transport services, and to determine the role of the private sector in helping their projects come to fruition," he added.

Our strategic partnership with Trans4 is a testament to our commitment to the four essential pillars of Qatar's national vision 2030; our current and future projects are aimed at the development of a safe, efficient, and integrated public transport network as an alternative and competitor to private transport," Al-Bishri added.

"We have always strived to make our mark in the world of modern transport, our railway projects ranking among the biggest, most sophisticated and most developed in the Middle East Region. We continue to do so, working by a delicate yet crucial business equation that sits on three ground principles: transparency, quality and timely delivery.

Our projects work in full integration to connect Qatar's key areas with each other and with their vital extensions, whereby the Doha Metro will tie together the capital's inner and outer areas such as Lusail city, the New Doha International Airport, the Education City, Al Wakrah and the West Bay area," he said.
